Norwegian town calls for Bitcoin mine closure over rising electricity costs
The city of Hadsel in Norway recently called for the closure of a local Bitcoin mine because of a 20% increase in electricity prices. According to estimates by Noranet Network Manager, after the mine is closed, ordinary households may face an additional annual electricity expenditure of $280.
This incident has attracted the attention and discussion of many residents. Mayor Kjell-Børge Freiberg once said that the noise from the mining center seriously affected the daily lives of residents. Although many residents are relieved about the closure of the mine, the subsequent increase in electricity prices has forced them to face new economic pressures because it accounts for 20% of the power company's revenue.
Climate technology venture capitalist Daniel Barton pointed out that the existence of the mine actually helps to reduce daily electricity prices, and this case provides a profound opportunity for reflection on the problems caused by Bitcoin mining.
Faced with this challenge, the city of Hadsel will actively seek new projects to make up for the reduction in electricity consumption caused by the closure of the mining center. It seems that all parties need to work together to find the best solution to balance environmental, economic and community interests.
