Risc Zero: Providing blockchain security for “any” off-chain applications
Risc Zero is working to bring blockchain security to “any” off-chain applications, marking a major advancement in cryptography. According to a Sept. 16 announcement, Risc Zero will launch a service called “Boundless” that addresses blockchain’s scalability challenges by breaking through the limitations of traditional on-chain execution with zero-knowledge proofs (ZK).
“Boundless” aims to remove the current constraints of on-chain computation and reduce transaction costs and execution time. Risc explained that in the current model, on-chain applications need to globally re-execute all transactions, a process that severely limits scalability. By using ZK proofs, Boundless can verify the correctness of computations without repeating them, thereby improving efficiency.
The latest generation of zero-knowledge proofs not only achieves orders of magnitude more computation, but also significantly reduces the associated costs. Risc said that “Boundless” is still in the testnet stage and is expected to realize new applications in multiple fields such as cryptocurrency exchanges, artificial intelligence and personal identification.
